How Social Networks and Social Media Create and Support a Learning Organization Essay A Learning Organization is a culture that nurtures learning. As such, processes encourage interaction. The entire infrastructure is one that prioritizes interaction that facilities learning. Creativity and problem solving techniques are inherent in learning organization and the appropriate skills and motivation are available for the learning organization to strive (Background Information, Module 3). When we consider social networks and social media, we can be left wondering if communication can truly be at the optimal level through social networks and social media. The reality is that technology and the communication that is embedded in it is growing exponentially. The concept of social learning has roots in a social constructivist approach, where learning is a self-directed, problem-based, and collaborative process (Bang and Dalsgaard, 2006). Through involvement in activities, learners must attempt to solve a problem according to their own process. Now, this may seem simple if learners were physically amongst each other to share the processes. However, the social networks and social media do allow for a very supporting learning environment. One thing that should be understood is that although there is a plethora of technological resources available, individuals must be able to tap into these resources in order to make use of social networks and social media to then, support a learning environment. Resources are information assets: media, people, places, or ideas. However, such resources are not learning materials until learners actively use them (Hannafin, Land, and Oliver 1999, p. 119). The internet, as a technological platform is a prime example of collaboration at its’ best. In his Techlearning blog of March 5, 2008, Steve Hargadon identified trends spurred on by the â€Å"two-way† nature of the Internet. These are trends that have significant impact on learning and education. According to Hargadon, there is a â€Å"new publishing revolution† arising from a shift in content creation for the Internet. At first, the Internet was a one-directional presentation medium where users received and read passively. Now the Internet is becoming an interactive platform, also known as Web 2. 0, based on contribution and collaboration. Blogs, wikis, file sharing, social networking, and other forms are revolutionizing how we create online content. In his blog entry, Hargadon discussed how he replies to questions that people ask about content overload. His response reflects how social networking and social learning flow into one another naturally, as social constructivism suggests they will. He said, â€Å"It is in the act of our becoming a creator that our relationship with content changes, and we become more engaged and more capable at the same time. † In other words, by participating we learn to become. In his January, 2008 paper, David Wilkins explores the importance of supporting social networks in the workplace, or â€Å"Workplace Communities. † Wilkins reviews social learning on the job in terms of improving employee development, performance, and growth, as well as its effect on workplace innovation. Wilkins shows a number of ways in which workplace communities support employee development, performance, and growth. They provide a mechanism for apprenticeship models, connecting less-skilled workers with their more experienced colleagues through social networking technologies. Communities can add an â€Å"Ask an Expert† feature to their network, to make it possible to leverage the expertise of individuals or groups. This forum echoes the Touro experience as professors respond to our Threaded Discussions, never in an evaluative manner, but in a way in which a professional and friendly dialogue is encouraged. Communities foster ownership of learning, according to Wilkins. The social aspect of communities can facilitate the â€Å"meeting† of content consumers with content producers through social networking. This social aspect of content provides an avenue for additional social networking and mentoring opportunities, and further empowers the workforce by providing opportunities for them [the consumers] to contribute, resulting in significant increases in the volume of content. This has the dual benefit of helping with both retention and productivity, while also moving the organization toward a deeper, more ingrained use of learning and knowledge. † (Wilkins, p. 6) Communities allow for the generation of a range of content types that appeal to different learning styles, levels, and objectives. Online resources include blogs and wikis, audio, and video. They may also include traditional learning courses and materials, and typical Office documents. Through sharing information, the workplace community provides access to immediate, relevant, and appropriate content suited to the needs of the individual. An extension of traditional training and development modes, communities offer a fluid way to support employee performance development and efficiency. Success requires free flow of ideas, and support by stakeholders, for communication between networks. It takes time to establish these conditions, and a carefully thought-out plan is essential. Indeed, a learning organization can thrive with the utilization of social networks and social media. These are convenient for everyone and are conducted in ways that are perhaps even more powerful, productive, positive, and as simple than face to face platforms. Certainly, the convenience and quality I have received within the on-line learning organization is top-notch, and great enough for me to dismiss any idea of traditional places of learning. Living in the Country

Living in the country has always been considered the healthiest and most relaxing choice one can make. The beauty of the land, open and friendly neighbours, genuine relationships, the tranquil pace of country life are some of the most attractive images that come to people?s minds when they feel tired of the pressures of city life. However, the dreams of moving away to a distant and quiet farm house are many times abandoned, especially by young people, when they come to think about the lack of opportunities that there are in the country. In fact, many young people feel they can not grow as professionals if they choose a quiet life style in the country, due to the poor quality of education and the lack of employment opportunities. The poor quality of education in the countryside can be perceived when one travels along rural roads and sees a few scattered primary schools, hidden among the mountains or in the woods. Children attend those schools only if it is not raining, and they travel long distances on horseback, or even on foot to reach the institution. Since the number of students is not enough to employ an English teacher, a Music teacher, a Sports teacher or a Computing teacher, those subjects are not taught, so children have no additional lessons. Finally, another factor that makes education reach very low quality standards is the fact that in many places there is no electricity, so it is imposible to imagine children from rural areas connected to the Internet, or having the possibility of watching a video or listening to music. To conclude, children from rural areas are not expected to develop their full potential due to the poor quality standard of education. Once young students finish primary school, and some priviledged adolescents can complete secundary education, they have to think about university or work. University is left only to the priviledged students who can afford to move to the city to continue their studies. The rest of the young population have to think about getting a job. And here comes another drawback of living in the country: as regards employment opportunities, there is a narrow range of jobs available for young people, and they are usually badly paid. Young people have to select among venturing into neighbouring towns, working at one of the relatively few jobs available nearby, or working on their own business. Since they have not been properly prepared at school, and employment opportunities are scarce, the joung rural population have relatively few opportunities to grow economically. Many people put forward many good reasons to live in the country and they are right. First, living in the country is safer than living in big cities, since there are less crimes. Second, it is also healthier because there is no pollution and no loud noises. Third, the pace of living in the country is quieter so sountry people’s lifespans are longer. Finally, many people argue that roads and means of communication have improved a lot in the last decades, so today living far away from the city is not so hard. However, for young people who are still trying to find their way to grow professionaly in order to gain economic stability, the city offers much more educational and economic opportunities than the stillness of the countryside.

High Museum Project

I chose to do my review project in â€Å"The High Museum†, in Atlanta GA. It was found in 1905 and its very first name was Atlanta Art Association. Also it is the one of the most visited art museum in the world. While, visiting High museum, I was drawn to two particular pieces from two very different artists. The Chest and drawers by Teyo Remy, gained my attention because of creative design and deep meaning. My other favorite piece is â€Å"The beginning of Life in the Yellow Jungle†, by Thorton Dial. I will be comparing two artist from Modern and Contemporary Art period.Teyo Remy was part of a group of young Dutch designers who came to the forefront of the international design scene with works that had a political awareness and also sense of humor. Chest and drawers piece was design in 1991, which was based on twenty drawers which each of those had a story with them. Very first drawer represents a jewelry box that was a gift to the young woman from the father. The enti re piece is held together by a furniture mowers strap that represents nature of life. Basically a strap would be a reference of us humans holding on the important things in life that matter to us.The reason I like this is because it connects to me with memories of my past and experiences I went through. To me, each drawer represents a memory in my life that has thought me to make better decisions in the future. I also like this design of art because it is amazes me how Teyo Remy managed to make a design that held twenty drawers together and none of them fell off. The color selections of the drawers are matte and plain colored that you see in your everyday life. This was a good selection because it made the piece more relatable. â€Å"You Can’t Lay Down Your Memory†, is a perfect title for this design as it shows the importance of past.Thorton Dial was born in 1928, Emelle, Alabama. He endured a life of poverty and hard labor. This self-taught artist has made astonishin g master pieces that represent history, politics, and power. He overcame many obstacles such as being illiterate, coming from poverty, and he also had a late start as an artist in his fifties. One of his famous pieces is â€Å"The Beginning of Life in the Yellow Jungle†, designed in 2003. Some of the materials he used for that particular design are plastic soda bottles, doll, clothing, bedding, wire, found metal, and rubber glove.Yellow color represent coming together of all â€Å"races† and working with each other in peace. Plastic soda bottles represent a new born that is innocent and pure in this world of chaos. The reason I chose this artwork is because initially it looked very disturbing, distorted, and mysterious. After a few minutes of looking at it, it began to speak to me. I begin to realize what Dial was trying say. To me this art represents a brighter side of the future. Through many life’s struggles and hardships I endured, there seems to always be a greater hope for better life.I also believe that this represent the beauty in struggles we encounter in our lives. In comparison, these two artists are very different but yet share a similar view on life. They come from very different backgrounds but these two particular pieces have an underlined connection. Dial basis his work on his experiences which are captured in his memory. He is able to express his views, struggles, and experiences from his past. On the other hand, Remy’s chest of drawers represents each of his memory in a tight space of drawers. And also, memories can be used as a stepping stone in a pathway to a greater life.

The motive of paternal dominance and tyranny imposed by Caleb Gare is clearly felt throughout the whole novel. He is driven by his desire to get more land and therefore more money. Therefore he does not only tyrannize his family, but also his neighbours. Devoting all his life to Just one materialistic goal, to acquire as much land as possible, Caleb uses his possessions to show his power and therefore possessions become his highest value. Caleb felt a glow of satisfaction as he stood there on the ridge peering out over his and until the last light had gone. He could hold all this, and more add to it year after year add to his herd of pure-bred Holsteins and his drove of horses raise more sheep experiment with turkey and goose for the winter markets in the south all this as long as he held the whip hand over Amelia. (Martha Ostenso 19) In this passage is shown his obsession with his farm, and a strong des ire to obtain as much as possible. He forgets about the real values of life and becomes selfish and arrogant man. He is described as a monster without feelings. His Ruthless behaviour towards amily and neighbours is the reason why the whole community hates him and at the same time is afraid of him. His indifference towards what people think about him is clearly shown in the following passage: Day in and day out, not a soul came to the Gare farm, not a soul left it, not even to visit the Sandbos, two miles or less away. And Caleb went about with the fixed, unreadable face of an old satyr, superficially indifferent to what went on, unconscious of those about him, underneath, holding taut the reins of power, alert, Jealous of every gesture in the life within which he moved and governed. (Martha Ostenso 34). An example of Calebs cruel and ruthless behaviour against his neighbours can be seen when he forces his son Martin to go fishing to the Bjarnassons lake. Martin meets Erik Bjarnasson with whom he talks about the fact that their lake is not yet open for fishing. Then Erik invites him to the house for coffee but Martin refuses. The hospitality of Eric shamed him very much. After this chat he decides not to obey the instructions which Caleb gave him and goes back home. Martin did not take the lake road. He thought with self-scathing of his original plan in coming here to slip down below the willows and around the end of the cove where he would not be seen by the Bjarnassons. Such had been Calebs instructions given in full belief that they would be obeyed. He would have to tell his father the truth when he arrived home. Caleb would be in a towering rage, which would express itself in a gentle sarcasm and later in a strange and sinisterly effective abuse of Amelia, that Martin never understood. (Martha Ostenso 125) When Caleb returned home and found out that Martin did not bring any fish, he had a little quarrel with Martin, after which he went out to his flax field and speculated how to ompel Martin to fish. After some time he visits his neighbour Thorvald Thorvaldson, because he has always wanted to get part of his land. When he enters the house, he sees that they had fish for dinner. This makes him happy because the only place where Thorvald could get this fish is the Bjarnassons lake. And he knows that Bjarnassons help during the haying. Fishing in his lake would not be readily forgiven, especially if the offender were trusted and indebted friend. It would surely mean an end to favours, and loans (Martha Ostenso 146) Caleb obtains reason to blackmails Thorvald. He offers Thorvald his silence and cash and Thorvald would have to give him a piece of his land. This scene was rather funny but at the same time dark and tense because it expressed treacherousness of Caleb. Thorvalds eyes grew sullen. Caleb Gare was getting him then. Na-ow! Not von acre! he rasped. Caleb shrugged his shoulders and turned to go. All right, but dont blame me if Bjarnasson dont come across with the crew, he said. Thorvaldson strode quickly into step with him as he walked toward the cart. Better than to lose Bjarnassons support. Vhen you vant it? He almost snivelled. (Martha Ostenso 148) It is obvious that everybody hates Caleb but they are too good-natured and naive to stop his quiet building of his influence. Caleb Gare controls his family with cruelty and hard physical labour. He forces his children to work all day on the farm. As his farm grows, there is more and more work to be done, but he has only his wife Amelia and four children to work there. He does not want to pay for extra workers because he sees in his family as free workers. Caleb must have had some other reason for not taking on extra help. It was his idea, apparently, to blind them all with work an extra man ould give them time for thinking, and dreaming. (Martha Ostenso 142) Although he has money, he does not want to pay for extra workers because he is simply too greedy. He does not even bother to buy his daughter Ellen new glasses. Ellen worked with difficulty because of her eyes, and frequently had to close them to ease their smarting. The hay dust bit at her lids so that they became bright red (Martha Ostenso 142). When he sees that Ellen does not work as fast and as perfectly as her siblings, he Just states that she has day-dreaming, and sends her to go over the hole strip again. That he sees her red eyes and does not have mercy upon her is an evidence of his cruel insensibility towards his family. The worst aspect of Caleb was the terror he imposed on his wife, Amelia. He holds her at bay because he knows about her illegitimate child which she had before married him. For Caleb, although he had known of Amelias moral defection before he married her, had always looked upon himself as the betrayed and cheated victim in a triangle. It was perhaps this which prevented him from ever feeling pands of remorse for his acts. His sensibilities ere crystallized in the belief that life had done him an eternal wrong, which no deed of his own could over-avenge. (Martha Ostenso 102) This passage shows why Caleb became such a merciless, wicked devil. The situation gets worse because this illegitimate child, Mark Jordan, arrives to the neighbourhood and falls in love with Lind Archer, the teacher who lives at the Gares. Amelia is afraid that Mark will find out that he is son of poor woman who married a farmer. Caleb knows exactly that Amelia does not want this secret to be revealed. If it was revealed, her family would have lost a good reputation. It was felt from the novel that at that times a good reputation of family was very important in the neighbourhood for the marriage. Amelia wanted her children to be happy and to marry someone and therefore she had to obey Caleb. Caleb thoughts turned to Amelia. She had behaved well of late. Perhaps she was even beginning to realize that no good would come of it if the to keep her reminded of that little mistake od hers that little mistake Also, it might be well to pay a visit to the young man, before the return of the Klovaczs. To sound him out, as it were, and to report to Amelia on his parts as a gentleman. Good idea, that. Amelia would break her heart rather than let a gentleman know the truth about himself. He might not even want to marry the Teacher if he knew that he had no name to offer her. (Martha Ostenso 145) Considering all of this, Amelia was forced to be cruel and to hold strong hand over her children to prevent any rebellion. He did not want his children to leave his farm because he would have to pay extra money for workers. And that is why he blackmailed Amelia with the secret of Mark Jordan. One night Amelia told him that Sven Sandbo wants to marry Judith, his most hardworking aughter. A dispute followed after that. Judith heard parts of it. Caleb began to enjoy the situation. fou think do you? Hah! Scared Bart might tell the truth, eh? Rather have Sven taken in, eh? Have him think hes marryin into fine stuff? mfou know you know nobody around here would marry the girls if if they knew. No, he agreed softly, the people around here are careful of their morals. But thats no reason why you should take advantage of them. Wouldnt it be better to wait and find out what Jude is going to be before you turn her over to an honest man? Amelia sprang to her eet, her face white. IVe had enough from you, you hypocrite! she said, her voice breaking. It isnt Jude youre thinking of. Its your filthy greed and the work you can get out of her. If you even told the truth I might I might respect your bullying. But this this I wont bear it you you sneak! (Martha Ostenso 99) The following passage shows Calebs psychical pressure that he used against Amalia in this quarrel. Caleb laughed under his breath. He spoke now almost in a whisper, as he always did when frenzy had its way with him. Getting independent suddenly, are ou? Mark Jordan isnt so far away but what I could reach him tonight, before I go to bed. Amelia shook her head, her lips moved silently. If she did not end the scene the children would know that something was happening below. Lind would hear. Caleb looked at her. She was a poor thing, after all, scarcely worth the trouble. (Martha Ostenso 100) As y ou can see, every time the children or Amelia make any extraordinary thing, Caleb threatens that he will tell Amelias secret to Mark. Children suspect that there is some secret and they are convinced that it is somehow related ith them. They are Just commiserate with their mothers fate. They know how revengeful their father is when the invisible line of his patience is crossed and therefore they live in submission hoping that the mysterious secret would never be revealed. Calebs daughter Judith is the only one who dares to rebel against him. Lind Archer compared her to a wild horse. Judith is a beautiful creature. Shes like a a wild horse, more than anything I know of. But Caleb doesnt give her a moment to herself even to think in. (Martha Ostenso 65) Caleb wants to keep Judith home under is control as long as possible because she is most useful to him in the farm. Judiths nature is very wild and she knows that she needs to get away from this household and have her own life. She is in love with Sven Sandbo. She meets him secretly but then Caleb finds out that she is meeting him because he spied on her. He crept along slowly, taking care not to step on dry branches. As the light fell he could make out low voices that seemed to come from a hollow. Now he could look down and see pool. (Martha Ostenso 165) What happened later on between Judith and Caleb in the barn is described in the following passage. She saw his face, like a mask cut out of granite. He had seen them she knew it instantly. Somehow he had discovered spied on them. He stepped into the barn. Judith was dumb. What er you up to, out there in the bush, eh? With what Sandbo dog, heh, heh! A bitch like your mother, eh? Come here and Ill show ye it pays to be decent! He took another step toward her. Judiths hand swept down and grasped the handle of the ax. She straightened like a flash and flung it with all her strength at Calebs head. Her eyes closed dizzily, and when she opened them again he was crouching before her, his hand moving across is moustache. The ax was buried in the rotten wall behind his head. (Martha Ostenso 166) After this accident he gains control over Judith. He locked the barn with the ax buried in the wall, because it is a proof that she tried to kill him. This situation was very welcome to him because it strengthened his influence over Amelia and the whole family. The case of Judith had been fortunate rather than otherwise. At first it had been a bit disturbing. The ax might have done more than graze his hair. As it was, the incident merely gave him greater control over affairs. It was another thing to old over Amelia. And it gave him security in regard to Judith it was a case for the police if he wished to make it one. (Martha Ostenso, 171) This way he somehow broke the wild spirit of Judith. Caleb stole her beliefs and dreams of a better and happier life. She becomes lifeless creature that only obeys orders. It wont do any good, Judith muttered. If I see Sven hell find out and then hell send me to the city. I know nothing good ever happens. (Martha Ostenso 173) She becomes lifeless creature that only obeys orders. Only thanks to Lind she took a chance to flee from her prison. This happens during the harvest Jubilee in Latts school, that was to take form of a masquerade. Even though Caleb finds out that she fled, he does not run after her to bring her back. Instead of that he has a terrible quarrel with Amelia. But this quarrel is not finished because of a fire which suddenly appears and is a big threat of his fields. He runs out to save the only thing that could be saved the flax field. There is no one to help him because his children are at the masquerade. He has to try to cut off the fire on his own. In doing this he has to get around the muskeg and the dried lake bottom. He ran on blindly, conscious only of the direction in which the flax field lay. The fire was gaining with every moment. For the week three assignment, the members of team A choose to discuss the case in which Premier Technologies wins intellectual property lawsuit. This paper would highlight details of the case. Doug Sayer, the owner of Premier Technologies, claimed that two of his former employees stole private information for trade secret infringement and future sabotage. The former men were members of top management at Premier Technologies. Orr and Schutte, the two men, downloaded the organizations insider information to external hard drivers, and shortly after that, left the organization to work for the competitor. According to Legal information Institute, Trade Secret is defined as the information, including a formula, pattern, compilation, program, device, method, technique, or process that derives independent economic value or potential, from not being generally known to or readily ascertainable through appropriate means by other persons who might obtain economic value from its disclosure or use. The issue is that Orr and Schutte had an intentional plan to use the operations of Premier Technologies against them to make the organization fall into the red and sale for a price less than what the business is worth. In Bannock County, Idahos Sixth Judicial District in December 2011 ruled in favor of Premier Technologies in the lawsuit Premier Technologies v. Chadd Orr, Jeff Schutte and Petersen, Inc. Doug Sayer, also Premier Technologys president and chief operating officer, argued that Chadd Orr and Jeff Schutte was conspiring with Peterson. This made Orr and Schutte breach their fiduciary duties that they owed to Premier Technology while they were high level managers at Premier Technologies. The jury unanimously voted in favor of Premier Technologies and agreed that both Orr and Schutte violated the Idaho Trade Secret Act, and that they both had a fiduciary relationship with  Premier. The jury also ruled in favor of Premier, implicating Petersen Inc. had, in fact, conspired with Orr and Schutte in breaching of their fiduciary responsibility to Premier Technologies. The ruling awarded a little over two million dollars to Premier Technologies. A $905,250 judgment was set against Schutte, while a $603,500 judgment against Orr was set for breaching their fiduciary duties. Punitive damages were awarded as such $172,000 against Schutte and $120,000 against Orr. The analysis of the case appears to be quite simple in nature. The courts decision ultimately stems from Orr and Schuttes fiduciary responsibilities that they owed to Premier during their employment with the company. The copy of protected data was not in itself the infraction, but when that information was subsequently provided to a direct competitor, an illegal activity had taken place and the two men were liable for their actions. The state laws of Idaho clearly protected Premier, and any business entity, from this form of intellectual property theft. It also awards that company money to satisfy the damages that were caused by these actions, and because of the intentional nature of the act, punitive damages were made possible as well. As there are often no formal means to protect the trade secrets that a company might have in their processes, litigation is sometimes the best option and, in this case, it certainly provided Premier with the chance to recoup their losses. As a future employee hiring procedure, it might be pertinent for Sayer to include an employee clause that gives up their right to work for a direct competitor in the future, as some highly competitive organizations do (Idaho State Journal). Through many trials and errors, laws have come to pass to protect each business from employees who wish to harm them. Orr and Schutte not only jeopardized Premier Technology’s operation, but they also jeopardized their integrity. Critical Analysis The Sun Also Rises English Literature Essay In the book The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway, we explore the lifestyles and complications of a group of American emigrants living in Paris, France. The story takes places after World War I. The novel concerns a group of psychologically bruised, disillusioned expatriates living in postwar Paris, who take psychic refuge in such immediate physical activities as eating, drinking, traveling, brawling, and lovemaking. Hemingway presents a strong accurate background to the setting and time period primarily because the story is based around his personal experiences as an American emigrant living in Paris. The characters are selfish in a sense that they act without thinking of the possible consequences for their actions and they feel free of any obligations to loyalty or honor to themselves or others. Though Hemingway was a renowned writer at the time of the novels conception, he opened the publics eyes to several taboo topics. At the period of time this book was written, which was in 1926, this book it was considered highly obscene and offensive. Hemingways knowledge of the feeling you get in Paris was evident given the vivid and detailed imagery of the citys streets, locations of business and buildings, and the entire panorama. The references to certain the cafes, buildings, restaurants, and historic locations defiantly provided that Euro-Parisian feeling. The genuine descriptions of Paris, included in the accurate naming of particular restaurants, streets, and neighborhoods gives a odd pull to the reader and somehow draws you inward: The driver started up the street. I settled back. Brett moved close to me. We sat close against each other. I put my arm around her and she rested against me comfortably. It was very hot and bright, and the houses looked sharply white. We turned out onto the Gran Via. Oh, Jake, Brett said, we could have had such a damned good time together. The amazingly colorful dialogue throughout the story makes you feel as though you are actually there eating at the cafà © and watching the drama unravel. Another significant location in this novel is Spain. In Spain, the characters journey to Burguete to fish and Pamplona to witness the Spanish bullfights, which is where Jake is introduced to Pedro Romero (Bloom 113). Romero is a nineteen year old young man, an authentic matador. Jake describes him as the best-looking boy he has ever seen, this is also where we get to see a little bit of Jakes homosexual tendencies. In this book sexuality is flaunted and brought up often. Lady Brett Ashley is probably the biggest source of promiscuity in the novel. She is separated from her husband awaiting a divorce because of her trouble with promiscuity. In addition, several of Bretts lovers are mention throughout the novel. Her lovers, to name a few, are Pedro Romero, Count Mippipopolous, and Mike Campbell. Hemingway was first made aware of bullfights in Spain by a fellow emigrant and was immediately captivated. He soon developed a passion for bullfights which certainly influenced his invention of Pedro Romeo as a character. Hemingways individual experiences are riddled throughout the story and play an important role in the invention and growth of specific characters. Jake Barnes is the narrator and key character in the novel. Jake is a grief stricken, American journalist living in Paris in the 1920s. While Jake does have homosexual tendencies he is in love with Lady Brett Ashley but the relationship is never pursued due to Jakes impotency. By description Jakes appearance is strikingly close to Hemingways actual looks, as well as his personality resembles Hemingway in several ways. After World War I, Hemingway felt strongly inept and detached from society; he often referred to himself as lyrically impotent and physically diminished (Bloom 95-100). Both Hemingway and Barnes were war woun ded, journalists working in Paris emigrant society. Hemingway was not rendered sexually impotent however; he actually suffered wounds to his legs when a mortar exploded in the trench that he was occupying to assist in the health related evacuation of another soldier. Encyclopedia texts cite Hemingways wounds to be awful, he had twenty-eight pieces of shrapnel removed from his legs, leaving behind over two hundred other pieces that were too deep to be removed (Bloom 80-89). Jakes war injury was an unfathomable wound to his genital area that left him impotent and in turn prevented him from having sexual relations with Lady Ashley or any other woman for that matter. Hemingway does not describe Jakes wound, the novel merely states: Undressing, I looked at myself in the mirror of the big armoire beside the bed. That was a typically French way to furnish a room. Practical too, I suppose. Of all the ways to be wounded. I suppose it was funny. I put on my pajamas and got into bed (Hemingway 38). After that excerpt there was no more mention of Jakes wound to the reader, it is left to the individuals imagination. Jakes best friend from the U.S. is Bill Gorton. Bill shares Jakes love of fishing and outdoorsy activities. Their relationship is one of respect and deep companionship. Bill is the animated, funny character in the novel. He brings humor to a very sad situation for Jake. His witty cynicism and comical perception bring light to the novel. In an excerpt from the book Hemingway tells us of situation in which Bill and Jake are venturing to Spain on the train and due to the large amount of Catholic Americans migrating to Spain the two were unable to get tickets for a lunch they had planned to attend. After much time had passed Bill became annoyed: Finally at a quarter past four we had lunch. Bill had been rather difficult to the last. Michael Campbell, another character in the novel, is a Scottish veteran who is independently wealthy and jobless. The novel is highly centered on drunken follies and Bretts weakness for alcohol and socialization. In each scene of the novel the group is drinking, either social or heavily, or trying to recover from a hangover by drinking more alcohol. The group lives without commitments or boundaries and do whatever comes to mind with no remorse or thought of obligations of loyalty to one another or anyone else. During the 1920s Paris was a focal point for young authors and artists of all sorts, among this congregation of emigrant youth was a spirited American woman named Gertrude Stein. Stein established a famous meeting location where painters and writers such as Picasso, Miro, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway would gather. The unbridled rendering of drunkenness, mention of human and animal gentiles, and the profanity alone was enough to have gotten the novel thrown in the trash by any other publisher. Hemingway responded to Perkins by saying, I think that wordsand I will cut anything I canthat are used in conversation in The Sun etc. are justified by tragedy of the story (Baker 211). In a message dated around a month later, Perkins had persuaded Hemingway to refrain from using such atrocious language (Baker 213). When the novel was finally published, the profane nature of the book alone, without the obscene language, was enough for critics to up heave. Critics labeled it as a profanity and the Watch and Ward Society of Boston added the novel to their list of obscene books and requested sellers not to sell the book at all (Baker 215). Hemingways mother, Grace, was among the most offended by the book and wrote her son a letter stating so. Ernest wrote his mother a modest and polite response stating that he didnt wish any pain upon her for reading it and he was not ashamed that he had written it. This novel is intentionally designed for the reader to question Hemingways purpose and intentions. Was the novel truly written to merely express an emigrants perspective in Paris? Or was the novel actually an outright slap in the face toward the American government by depicting drunkenness during the prohibition? At any rate it is a deliberate use of profane language and portrayal of explicit and obscene events for that time period. Hemingway was in no way a conformist even at an early age. In Hemingways new art there was no human experience that was untouchable, no subject matter that was forbidden (Reynolds 210). His mother, Grace Hemingway, stated that Ernest was often times a wayward boy and somewhat of an outcast (Baker 243). Even though the novel received ample negative reviews, The Sun Also Rises went down in history as one of Hemingways best works, a master piece. In 1954, Ernest Hemingway was award the Nobel Prize in Literature. In his acceptance speech he stated a writer should always try for something that has never been done or that others have tried and failed. Then sometimes, with great luck, he will succeed (Hulse par. 8). This novel was definitely the first of its kind, a ground breaker of epic proportions. Like the Americans who migrated to france, the The Sun Also Rises was a pioneer, a leader into the literary unknown. Hemingway is now and forever will be the cherished writer who led the American public into the next wave of unexplored topics. His life was a story in itself that lead to several great novels. In his fiction, the conflicting elements of his personality, the emotional situations which obsess him, are externalized and objectified; and the result is an art which is severe, intense, and deeply serious (Bloom 7). Hemingways career included four marriages (and three divorces); service as an ambulance driver for the Italians in World War I (with an honorable wound); activity as a war correspondent in the Greek-Turkish war (1922), the Spanish Civil War (1937-39), the Chinese-Japanese War (1941) and the War against Hitler in Europe (1944-45). Add big-game hunting and fishing, safaris, expatriation in France and Cuba, bullfighting, the Nobel prize, and the ultimate suicide in Idaho, and you have an absurdly implausible life, apparently lived in imitation of Hemingways own fiction (Baker 5). He is an elegant poet who mourns the self, who celebrates the self (rather less effectively) and who suffers divisions in the self. In the broadest tradition of American literature, he stems ultimately from the Emersonian reliance on the god within, which is the line of Whitman, Thoreau, and Dickenson (Baker 2). In short, Hemingway led a full and beautiful life that will be forever mourned. He is one of the greatest writers in American history acclaimed by many. Original Writing My writing as a poet has been heavily influenced by writers like Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, Alice Walker and Slam poets such as Black Thought and the Last Poets. These writers write and speak about the struggles and uniqueness of Black culture. Their individual experiences and political stances as well as the influences of other artist are evident in their work. For example in Giovanni’s poem â€Å"Revolutionary Music† she quotes some of the lyrics from Sam Cooke and James Brown to illustrate her personal views on racism and the equal rights movements. Hughes in his piece titled â€Å"Message to the President† skillfully incorporates the political events of his time into his poem using it to sardonically articulate his view on racial inequalities that were occurring in his time. Black Thought and the Last Poets utilize jazz and urban hip hop along with their idea of Black to relay their message. In writing my individual poems, I find it difficult not to incorporate the style of the writers mentioned. I gained my consciousness of Black culture and struggle through the words of these writers their ideas have no choice but to be reflected in my own writing. I wrote a piece titled â€Å"Books not Bombs† which originated during the time the troops were being sent to Iraq to fight a war that was unnecessary in my opinion. The students at my high school and schools around the city were walking out of class to protest in city hall; however, we were told that we would be suspended by the principal if we left. I felt that the administration was silencing our voices by holding us with the threat of suspension. In this poem I used a line from a local pop song from the group OutKast, â€Å"They’re throwing bombs over Baghdad, but what about the bombs that are exploding right here, right now†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Using this mimics Giovanni and Hughes’ incorporation of musica l lyrics of the time to make the piece relatable to the intended audience. I was also influenced by the social political climate that was being hotly debated at the time (war). My particular social influence is reflective of Robert P. Yagelski’s essay â€Å"Who’s Afraid of Subjectivity†. In his essay he used Donald Murray’s experience of writing and rewriting his piece which was reflective of his war years and the political controversy of his time. â€Å"†¦which provided impetus to write the poem and helped and helped shape the very content of the poem.

“Mother” by Grace Paley Essay

The Jewish Grace Paley was born in 1922 and grew up in the Bronx, New York. Quite dedicated in the civil rights movement she started writing short stories in the fifties. Additionally, Paley was involved in the women’s- and the peace movement. She wrote a number of short stories but got never done a whole book. Her stories contain mostly daily people from different ethnic groups, especially of the Jewish population. Grace Paley often tells her stories in an ironical sound and perspective of a female narrator. â€Å"Mother† is a short but profound story. It is told through the flashbacks of a daughter. Pointing out several details, the image where the mother stands in various doorways is the most remarkable one. At the end of a story, there is a sentence â€Å"I wish I could see her in the doorway of the living room.† As a reader, I understand that the narrator utter these words from the bottom of her heart. It is likely to me that there is a mixture of feelings e xpressed in this saying: nostalgia and regret. The first reason of her wish is that she misses her mother. She misses her so much with all what she used to do when she was alive. All her memories seem to revive within her mind. We all know that family sentiments are very delicate, especially sentiments between mother and daughter. Therefore, even years after her death, whenever she misses her mother, everything seems like just happen yesterday. The second reason for her wish is because of her regret or repentance. When her mother was still alive, she made her sad and worried a lot about her. Now she wants to see her mother again to tell her that she has made a great progress. She has become mature and led a good life as her mother always hoped. Also, she feels regretful because her mother died when her mind was full of worry; neither the daughter nor the husband set her mind at rest. If her mother reappeared in the doorway again, she would tell her immediately that she could feel secure about her future and rest in peace. Above a ll else, it is her nostalgia and regret that she wishes to see her mother again in the door. As human beings, people often do not know what they get until it has gone. Consequently, they live with nostalgia and regret. The author uses a lot of stylistics devices to make the story more sentimental. There is a rhetorical question â€Å"what will become of you?† which shows the mother’s concern about her daughter’s future. We can see that the mother really cares  about her daughter. Another impressive stylistic device is when the father complains about his work. He uses a repetition of the word â€Å"talk†. It occurs four times in one paragraph. As a result, he says the words â€Å"talk talk talk talk† back-to-back but, nevertheless, still doesn’t talk to her which shows his indifference. The author uses a quite simple language, and keeps her sentences relatively clear and brief. She might do this to point out that the narrator is just a simple girl, a teenager. The lesson I draw from this story is that we should cherish what we are p ossessing, especially our parents. Their love and care is endless. Like it is said the story, most don’t take much of their mothers’ advice, but later they realize how important they were.

Titus Andronicus Character Study

What do we learn about Titus Andronicus in the opening to Shakespeare’s play? Our first introduction to the character of Titus Andronicus is by way of a speech my his son, Marcus, who represents the voice of the common people in the election campaign for emperory, declaring that Titus Andronicus has been chosen by the people of Rome to be the next emperor. He hails Titus as a hero, saying that there is not a nobler or braver warrior to be found within all of Rome. He is obviously held in great esteem by Marcus, who calls him ‘good Andronicus’, and ‘Renowned’ Titus. These descriptions of him using the positive epithets are powerful yet very simple to understand. He is portrayed in a very positive light, and is well respected within Rome for his many years of military campaigns against the enemies of Rome. He returns a hero, with a claim to the title of emperor. However, his successes have not come without great person losses, as we learn he has buried many of his sons on return from his various military causes. The first insight we see into his character is one of cruelty and vengefulness, when he rejects Tamora’s pleas to spare her first-born son and is the perpetrator of extreme violence, sacrificing him in revenge for the deaths of his sons at the hands of the Goth’s, her people. This view of Titus as a merciless killer starkly contradicts what we had learned about him from Marcus, who led us to expect Titus to be honourable and good and sets the tone for the play as dark and brutal. The sudden violence is a shock, and we see that there are two sides to his character: the much loved hero and the ruthless warrior. Titus has fought for Rome for 40 years, so is quite old by Roman standards and though he has been chosen by the people to be their emperor, he feels that he is not suitable to rule: â€Å"A better head her glorious body fits, than his that shakes for age and feebleness. † Here he is saying that he feels he is no fit to rule an empire as glorious as the Roman Empire, and relinquishes he claim to rule. This humbleness of character is a huge contrast from the violent nature we saw him display when he demanded the death of Alarbus. He asks for a ‘staff of honour’ instead of a ‘sceptre to control the world’ and favours Saturnine to be emperor in his place, as he is the late emperor’s eldest son, showing that he values tradition over the far more virtuous character or Bassianus. He then shows loyalty to the unlikeable Saturninus over his own son, mercilessly killing him when he stands in his way. This second brutal act because of his slavish loyalty to Rome provokes even the violent Goths to declare that they are not ‘half so barbarous’ as Rome. The ‘honourable’ Titus that we were first introduced to actually shows contempt for honour in trying to force his daughter to break her betrothal, and his wild devotion to Roman customs causes more harm than good, especially to him; he quickly goes from being the favourite of Rome to being despised by Saturnine because of the betrayal of his family. His actions seem chaotic and random, yet follow the ongoing theme of revenge, making ‘Titus Andronicus’ a revenge tragedy.

MTV has had to conquer various environmental hurdles in order to expand their network to reach a global audience.   While the marketing strategy and the product strategy that MTV employed was not particularly innovative, the common sense approach proved to be extremely effective.
